School is out..

and has been for three weeks and I'm just now getting around to blogging about it!

In May, my oldest DS had a great number of things going on related to the end of school:

* induction into the National Junior Honor Society
* Duke TIP Recognition Ceremony
* End of Year Band concert
* Auditions for placement in band for next year (made the highest band!)
* Signed up to play football! A new adventure.
* Did extremely well on the state assessment tests (was commended, again ;-) )
* Finished up with speech -- hopefully for good!


My youngest finished the school year strong -- he took the state assesment tests for the first time ever and was commended! Very proud!

Now summer is in full swing. We started it off by having belated birthday parties for both boys. Youngest had a swimming party with friends; oldest, a pizza party and Toy Story 3 viewing.

The oldest is involved in many things this summer:

Band camp (two weeks, now over), football conditioning camp (starts Monday), Youth camp at church, & volunteering at VBS @ church.

The youngest has a much more relaxed schedule (thank goodness) and will attend VBS and Kids' camp w/ church.

The only other news here is that the hubby resigned from his old job and has started with another company, doing basicaly the same thing. No move (physically) was required. Thank goodness for companies that allow telecommuting! With both sets of parents in the area, a move just isn't in the cards for us at this time.

So, other than that, it's just a hot, Texas summer.

Football

Well, both boys have had several football practices this week. The oldest is getting back into the groove. The youngest is playing tackle football for the very first time. We got an email from the head coach after the 2nd practice of my DS's life and the coach was saying he's not sure tackle football is the sport for my youngest.

That's heartbreaking to hear when your child has expressed an interest in a sport and the parents have invested mucho dollars for the equipment. My hubby went to practice w/ the youngest DS tonight. Other dads commiserated w/ my hubby and said there were quite a few kids who 'played' like my DS is, but that was last year.

We are moving forward. At least we are in a league where the players are guaranteed playing time. If my son wants to quit, that's fine. To have a coach watch him practice twice and then say he doesn't think my kid is good enough to avoid injury smarts just a bit.

Are you ready for some football?

Hallelujiah! Football season is upon us! The Aggies have started their season, pro ball is done with pre-season, and my oldest DS is starting YMCA tackle football! WHOOP! The oldest DS was 'discovered' at church a couple of Sundays ago by a friend. The friend assumed that we'd gotten DS signed up, but after our summer, we'd missed the sign-up deadline. Well, his son is on a team and that team needed one more player. You guessed it...my DS filled the slot.

Now bear in mind that my DS is 10 and is 5'6" and about 170 lbs. I'm fairly certain that I'll have to have a copy of his birth certificate on me at our games, just to prove he's young enough to be playing. But, DS is thrilled to be playing and I'm thrilled to be a football mom.

I doubt the checkbook is thrilled. We, of course, purchase all of our own equipment for this endeavor and I'm suiting out a kid who is as big as some high schoolers. Ah well....the price I pay for having a lineman!
