February 2010 so far

Well...a recap of the past 4 weeks:

* took a cruise w/ hubby and some of his geek friends and their wives. Had a good time. Made new friends and hope to see the ladies again in June for a crafting weekend. Woo Hoo! The guys will be in Dallas for a conference, so the wives should have fun too!

* Oldest DS competed in ensemble and solo competitions during our cruise and made a 1 on both of his pieces. YAY!!! Then his band director pulled him into an ensemble where a student didn't show up (!) and DS made a 1 on that one too! And he was sightreading the music. So proud! Did you get hit by a button as it popped off my shirt? lol

* youngest DS is now 10. Cannot believe it. Where'd the time go? Must still organize the birthday party, but he had a great time sharing a giant chocolate chip cookie cake with his classmates at school.

* I'm doing the administrative part of starting up a SENG Model Parenting Group -- a discussion group for parent of gifted kids as we read our way through Jim Webb's book. That's coming together nicely.

* I had a great time last week making rehearsal dinner invitations with a friend for her son's upcoming wedding.

* Lastly, saw both my GP and endocrinologist in the past month and BOTH are very please with my HA1C number.

Life is good.

Vacation

We had a wonderful time at our friends' house in Colorado. The weather was cool, had a couple of days of rain, just heavenly.

If you ignore that fact that

on Monday I sprained my left ankle (day one & same foot that I had x-rayed 2 weeks ago suspecting a stress fracture)
on Tuesday Youngest DS scraped his back on the ceiling. Yes you read that right. imagine a boy, a bunk bed and a low ceiling.
and on Wednesday hubby accidentally stubbed his toe on one of those log chairs. The chair didnt' give, his toenail did.

We wondered what the oldest DS was going to do to injure himself on day 4, but he sailed through vacation w/o any physical injuries.

The drive back was long, but it was great to sleep in my own bed again!

I had stamp club tonight and the ladies were responsible for being the creative ones! They had to design a card and bring enough goodies for each of the attendees to make one to take home.

In all we walked away with 7 new projects and had lots of fun doing it!

Long time since I last posted

Well...the last time I posted I was at my 25th high school reunion. That was a fun trip. Got to see lots of people I had not seen in 25 years! I was disappointed some of the people I'd hoped to see did not make it (Sherri!) but I understand that family comes first.

When we returned home, we had to do so by swinging by the local airport and dropping off DH for a week long business trip. :-( But he needed to go and the boys and I did o.k. on our own.

Mom and I had a couple of serious discussions with a counselor present and got everything worked out!

Since then, I have been busy with summer stuff. Sent the oldest DS off to youth camp and he came back with the H1N1 flu. Yipee (not). So he missed the Youth mission trip that our church took this week. My DS has not complained too much about not getting to go on the trip, but he's still got an awful cough. May have to take him to the doctor again soon if cough meds don't fix him up.

My mom got the final report from her oncologist. No chemo. or radiation is warrented at this time. Hooray! I know she was dreading treatments.

I am working on going through piles of clutter in my house. Seeing how nice it was in the studio loft on vacation (with NO clutter) and then having the house clean for the weekend allowed me to see that I need to do this for all of us.

I'm working on putting my stamping supplies in the proper places tonight. If I get that done, I'll try to post some photos of recent projects I've done.

R&R

This past weekend I was able to get away from the rat race that is my life. I got away on Friday and did not return home until Sunday afternoon. It was just wnat I needed. I got to rest, relax and be creative. I made 50 plus cards and a couple of projects. It was just what the doctor ordered. I made new friends and had time with a very good friend that I don't get to see often enough.

More Stamping

I had stamp club tonight at my house and we had two projects. One was a very simple card -- what I would call a 'minimalist' card, and the other was a stair step card.

The minimalist card uses the new Stampin' Up! "Just Buzzin' By" stamp set and the striped grosgrain ribbon in Pumpkin Pie.

The stair step card was made with Taken with Teal CS and a retired Designer Series paper -- Petals and Paisleys. The remainder of the stair step card was made using various punches. We also used the "Chit Chat" Rub ons.

January's already gone

Where did it go? We've survived another holiday season and the bills that come with it! ha. My friend's marital situation has not improved, but it hasn't deteriorated any more that I'm aware of. My children are healthy and my husband is still employed. His employer is not laying off so that's good. Unfortuantely, Texas Instruments IS laying off and friends from church are affected. We must pray that they get new jobs quickly.

We had an ice day this week and the boys were off from school. That means one extra day of school at the end of the year, or a lost in-service day for the staff/faculty. I hope it's the latter and not the former.

My oldest attended a youth weekend at our church last weekend. The emphasis was on purity and maintaining abstinence until marriage. My oldest doesn't even like girls yet. He participated in the weekend, but not in the committment ceremony that our youth pastor led. In a year or two, we'll see if he wishes to participate, but I didn't think an 11 yr. old needed to make that kind of promise -- yet.

Not much else to report.

Oh -- I have make valentines for my youngest to take to school and give out. I think they turned out very well. Here's they are: 1) is for his teacher and 2) is a sample of the ones he's distributing. And just for the record, the red card stock has hearts stamped on it. The scan just didn't pick that up.

I finally got around to creating a card or two today. I like this one the most. I CASEd it from Andrea Walford's blog at www.andreawalford.com

Drowning in junk and other weighty thoughts

As I've said before, it's been a hard year around here.

And when you walk into my house, you see it. We never get all of the laundry done at one time any more. That I'm coming to grips with. I'll just do laundry daily until my kids are grown. O.K. I have kids. They are healthy. They get clothes dirty. I can do the wash -- and so can they (thank goodness).

But...my hobby of stamping cards and other stuff has taken a back burner this year. I miss having time to do that. I miss being invited to be the demonstrator at stamping parties. Of course, I have to get out there and rebuild my business and get new customers who want to have parties. And when will I find time to do that? Who knows!

I never seem to have a single room completely clean any more. I can hire people to clean the house, but NO ONE can clean the house if it's drowning in clutter. And I don't have the drive to get it in order. Depressed? maybe. Discouraged? yes. Wishing that I could twitch my nose like Samantha did on Bewitched? You bet! But we all know that THAT only happens on T.V.!

And adding home schooling to my list of activities and responsibilities this year certainly didn't open up any free time. If anything it created another area in which I can feel inadequate. (And yes I did have to rephrase that sentence so it didn't end with a preposition! Maybe I"m learning something too! ha) I don't think that I have done the best that I could as a home schooler this year. But I have to measure that against "the best that I could do...given that my life stunk this year." And as a good home school friend has told me -- "God knew what your year would be like when He placed it on your heart to home school. Don't worry about it." I need to have that tattooed on my arm or something so that I can see it all the time.

But, my son is able to read now. He is reading for pleasure on occasion. He is still loving math -- which was always a love for him. We do occupational and speech therapy, in addition to musical education -- all of those three are outside the home.

What were my goals when we started home schooling?

1) to teach my son to read.
2) to give him a more relaxed environment in which to learn -- we certainly don't hold to any strict schedule here!
3) to allow him another year to mature and to overcome gross and fine motor skill problems in the hope that handwriting would improve.
4) to work on tackling the speech issues.
5) to get the ADD under control, so that he can concentrate and learn.

If I sit and look back at that list, then I have been successful. I hope that others think so. It's difficult when my mom is a retired public school teacher. I feel the urge and push to put my child back in public school so that I don't make her think that I thought her career was misspent. My choice to do home schooling this past year had nothing to do with her, or her career choice.

This past year was about doing what was best for my child so that he could learn at a pace that worked for him.

But now the 'school year end' is looming. And so are the questions from everyone about "Are you going to continue to homeschool?" At this point I have to say "I don't know." I am trying to decide if it's worth the trouble to have ALL of that testing redone in the public school system (because they won't use the old results -- for good or bad). It's a huge mess that I'd have to navigate once again. And when the testing is done, there's no guarantee that an IEP would be created for my child. Then I'd have to approach the school system about a 504 plan. Sort of a way of getting the services needed, but without being under the special ed umbrella.

OR

I could give it another try this year with a different curriculum. And possibly join a co-op so that we have 1) other friends who are home schoolers, 2) a social outlet for me (see previous post from today), and 3) the opportunity for my DS to socialize and play with other kids.

Why am I so moody today? It's not a full moon. The weather isn't changing, is it? All elementary school teachers would tell you that if either of those occurred, the kids would be swinging from the rafters. And if they happened to occur AT THE SAME TIME! oh my word.

That's what I feel like today. Full moon + weather craziness all wrapped up into one big mess and thrown at me. and that the world hit a bullseye on my emotions.

Ugh.

Stamping

I have not posted anything here yet about my hobby of stamping. So, I guess now's the time. I've added some pics of some cards I've made in the past.
